One Day You're In, The Next Day You're Out

These days, food is kind of like fashion, one day you're in and the next day you're out. We see the shiny label for "all-natural," "organic," or "less fat" and think that this is the answer to our problems. For a short period of time, agave nectar seemed to hold the torch for the trendiest product on the shelves. It made promises of being healthier than regular Agave nectartable sugar by offering a low glycemic index, as well as possessing the ever so popular "organic" sticker of approval. I was right on trend circa 2009 using agave nectar in everything from the marinades I made to the cocktails I drank. Coming from a long lineage of diabetics, I try to keep my sugar intake down and thought agave nectar was the greatest thing on the planet.

Of course, in no time at all, researchers were debunking claims that agave nectar was any better than regular sugar. However, if you're on a glucose-free or vegan diet, agave nectar is still your saving grace as it is has no glucose and uses no animal products. When it comes to sugar intake, however, I'm not sure what to believe. While the hopes that agave nectar would reduce my blood sugar may only be a passing trend, I do know that agave nectar is still the best sweetener for cocktails (which kind of defeats the whole healthy thing anyway, but whatever). The reason is because agave nectar dissolves in liquid better than any other sweetener, leaving a smooth, clean, even sweetness throughout. And if it just so happens that researchers come back with new claims that, once again, agave nectar is better for you after all, well then lucky me! To be honest, I can't keep up anymore.

Memorial Day weekend begins in T-minus 6 hours, and here's how I plan on getting the party started: A Grapefruit Mojito with agave nectar! For more pictures and details, visit the originator of this amazing recipe at Iowa Girl Eats.

What you need:

  • 1 grapefruit
  • 20 mint leaves
  • 4 teaspoons agave nectar (save 65? on Domino Agave Nectar)
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons reserved grapefruit juice
  • 3 oz. rum (2 shots)
  • Ice
  • Sparking water
What you do:

Muddle 4 grapefruit segments, mint, agave nectar and lime juice in the bottom of a martini shaker with the end of a wooden spoon. Add grapefruit juice and rum, then fill the shaker 3/4 full with ice. Shake until very cold. Then, evenly divide between two glasses filled with ice. Top with sparkling water (to taste) and garnish with remaining grapefruit segments.
